Series: James Bond Ranked
The first screen adaptation of Ian Fleming’s character of James Bond, and one of the three “Non-Canon” Bond films. I can see the argument that because this was originally aired as part of a Anthology television series that this doesn’t even count as a film, but those are semantics and I HATE SEMANTICS. Let’s just go with the reasoning that everything in the world is a film. Every single thing.
This short televised version of Casino Royale sucks unfortunately. The lower stakes and low amount of set pieces are interesting, and the fact that they never change the location is actually a nice change of pace, but it’s just very very dull. Barry Nelson was a…

I figured that I would try my best to binge all of the 007 films before No Time to Die comes out. And I figured that I would start with the unofficial Casino Royale from 1954, and all I can say is this:
Well that’s fucking lame.

Bond-a-thon – Bond B-Sides
An American “Jimmy” Bond? A British Clarence Leiter? A female Mathis? This feels less like a prototype Bond and more like slipping into an alternate Bond Universe!
The live 1954 television adaptation of Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale is an episode of the dramatic anthology series Climax!… That sounds more like a sex anthology show to me… but I digress. The fifty minute show is a mostly dated dry affair. Barry Nelson is not a great forgotten Bond. But Peter Lorre as the first Bond screen villain? Hell yes! His unique voice and magnetic screen presence is really the only thing that makes this worth watching.
The script is a pretty cut down version of Casino Royale.…

Bond-a-thon to “No Time to Die”
Step 1 of 27
Watched on YouTube
This live recorded episode of the US television show “Climax!” from 1954 was the first screen adaptation of a James Bond story long before Eon Productions Ltd. received the film rights to Bond. When Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer finally acquired the rights to the 1967 Casino Royale parody adaptation, the studio also acquired the rights to the television film. Some sources suspected that this was done with the intention of ultimately adapting James Bond in a potential television series starring Barry Nelson (the Overlook Hotel manager Stuart Ullman from Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining”) as Bond.
In order to fit into the 50 minute episode scheme and not to exceed the…

For Queen and Country: A Bond-A-Thon officially starts April 1st!

I’ve decided that it’s time to watch all the non-eon Bond films and as this was the first that came out, it was the logical choice to start with.
This isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. The budget is very low and it shows in the overall quality of the film, but this was made for the TV so that is expected.
The runtime is also very short with the film clocking in at under 50 minutes. Even though it was very short, the movie delivered almost everything that it needed to.
One thing that doesn’t help this movie is that the Craig Casino Royale is so much better. It had a bigger budget and had a… -
One Movie Everyday 2020
Was planning on watching the 1967 verison of Casino Royale, when I found out there is another another Casino Royale movie. If you’ve not seen it… don’t bother. You haven’t missed much.

The very first James Bond movie. Actually it was a live TV episode on a show called “Climax!” Peter Lorre is a great Bond Villain ™ and it’s too bad he wasn’t used in any of the movies. I paid a dollar for this at a Salvation Army. I’d pay a dollar for any Peter Lorre movie, even that beach movie he did.
Overall this is pretty stagey as it was early TV, as I said, but they move things along at a good pace.
Anyway, James Bond (Jimmy) is American and “Clarence” Leiter is British. This is the only Ian Fleming book I’ve read and they kept to it mostly, cutting a lot out for the running time of 52…

Mads Mikkelsen’s “Le Chiffre” was the best villain of the Daniel Craig Bond era, which means he is almost as good as Peter Lorre, playing the same character here, in this otherwise dull TV adaptation of the novel. Americanizing James Bond as Barry Nelson’s “Jimmy” wasn’t a great idea, and on top of that his poker face is ridiculously bad. You will believe he has no idea how to play Baccarat. This is a fascinating Bond historical artifact but only enjoyable for Peter Lorre fans.

The first ever bond movie is a boring but interesting one.
Barry Nelson plays a decent Bond but the writing is so dull & plain bad in parts
The pacing feels rushed then again it is all jammed in to 49 minutes I feel if this was as long as other bond movies it would be actually quite decent.

Pretty much a drag to sit through once you’ve seen everything the Bond franchise has to offer.

The very first on screen portrayal of James Bond and he’s… American? And played by the hotel manager in The Shining?
It’s okay I guess but pretty sloppy even for a 1950s television episode and when compared to the 2006 film that’s a million times better in every way. Not great but still better than Die Another Day. Also this is my 1300th logged film which is strange but it is what it is.
